Far and Wide

Illahee families provide support all year long!

Maddy enjoys a visit with Isabel and Emma

This morning we received an email from staff member Maddy Hargis updating us on a teaching interview she had yesterday. The interview went well and she felt well prepared so our fingers are crossed that she will get the position! Maddy has been keeping us posted throughout the process and I have been reminded of one of the more powerful aspects of being a camp counselor, the formation of a wide networking family. Several campers attend the school where Maddy interviewed. She writes:

The Sweeney family has been wonderful through this entire process. I came over the night before my interview and got pizza with the family! They were watching the camp movie as I left. It was so nice and comforting seeing campers there as I was interviewing. Emma came up and gave me the biggest hug. It’s funny they always look to us (counselors) for comfort yet yesterday they (campers) put me at ease.”

I hear it a lot; there is nothing quite like a relationship formed at camp, whether counselor to counselor, counselor to camper, or camper to camper. They are unique, strong and lasting. And the cool thing? When the common factor is Camp Illahee, it simply extends from there and your network suddenly includes families of campers, friends of counselors etc. etc.  Being a counselor creates a wide pool of support all over the country and indeed continues far beyond the summer season! Good luck, Maddy!
