Laurie's Blog

Laurie of Camp Illahee
Director Laurie Strayhorn loves the traditions and natural setting that are hallmarks of Camp Illahee. As a history major in college and a former English teacher, she has always enjoyed people’s “stories.” Her connection to alumnae and hearing their memories of camp brings Illahee’s 90 year history to life. “I always know when an alumna is returning to camp after years away. She’ll walk right past Curtis and toward the lake (often dragging along a husband or patient friend) while humming a campfire tune. The generations of directors, campers, and loyal alumnae have shaped Illahee into the camp we all enjoy today.” Laurie enjoys welcoming “old campers” back to camp…so come see us!

In his recent post, Gordon mentioned his trip with Turner to Zion Park in Utah. While they were out west, Gretchen, Kris, Dave and I were in Atlantic City, NJ- ok, an unlikely travel destination for four North Carolina camp directors, but we joined 2500 directors from all over the country for a terrific camp Read more...
