Laurie's Blog

Laurie of Camp Illahee
Director Laurie Strayhorn loves the traditions and natural setting that are hallmarks of Camp Illahee. As a history major in college and a former English teacher, she has always enjoyed people’s “stories.” Her connection to alumnae and hearing their memories of camp brings Illahee’s 90 year history to life. “I always know when an alumna is returning to camp after years away. She’ll walk right past Curtis and toward the lake (often dragging along a husband or patient friend) while humming a campfire tune. The generations of directors, campers, and loyal alumnae have shaped Illahee into the camp we all enjoy today.” Laurie enjoys welcoming “old campers” back to camp…so come see us!

The New Year has brought Dave Hartsock to our year round team.  Illahee campers have known Dave for the past seven summers as Illahee’s fantastic tennis director. I’ve had a great time traveling this year and seeing camp families and showing the Illahee movies.  We added some new Illahee towns earlier this fall – Shelby, NC hosted by Cassie Luce Plaster and High Point, NC hosted by Mary More Keever.  Both reps were long time campers and counselors and are now sending Read more...

September 8th, 2010

Camp always comes to a sudden halt when the last session closes.  While the cabin line and lake may be quiet, we are busy in the office reviewing video footage from the summer and planning our fall travel tour.  Alumnae visitors bring much welcome excitement when they stop by to see us.  The beautiful Labor Read more...

August 20th, 2010

One of my favorite things to do is welcome Illahee girls back to camp! Seldom does a season pass without an alumna returning to the “Heavenly” for the first time since she was a camper. Often this absence can be marked in decades! Recently, alumnae Kathy McGrady and Kathy Cabble returned with prospective campers for Read more...

I have some exciting news to report that has been several months in the making…we have two new full-time familiar faces to add to our year round Illahee team! The first has been an Illahee girl for twenty summers, and worked year round  in our office until the end of last summer when she and Read more...

90th Reunion!

May 16th, 2010

So the word on the street (at least according to Frankie Hall) is that this past weekend reunion was the “best reunion ever?”  But then again, isn’t it always the best reunion ever?  A weekend in the heavenly world with childhood friends and new friends from other generations is an easy formula for magic and Read more...
