Laurie and Gretchen visited campers, counselors and even a few alumnae in 6 cities in the last week! Laurie enjoyed five flights on her tour (and four airlines) starting in Dallas on Sunday and then travelling to Houston, Tampa, and Mobile returning to camp on Saturday. Gretchen elected to drive the “bus-burban” across state making stops in Winston Salem and Raleigh as well as visiting counselors at Wake Forest. She had previously driven west to visit Nashville and Birmingham campers. All camp sessions are full with the exception of the Junior session (August 9 to 14th) for campers entering 2nd to 6th grades.
The Illahee roadshow is a great time for us to visit with current camp families and hear first hand what girls love most about camp. It’s also a time for new families to ask questions. So what’s the most asked question? Easy! “Does my camper need to bring a camp trunk?” A lot of us think of the classic cargo trunk as a hallmark of camp, but more and more girls are bringing the soft-sided trunks that are just as great to live out of and are much lighter weight, easier to store and to handle.
Other girls want to know about coming to camp without a friend. That’s one that older campers jump to answer as many of them first attended camp without a buddy. Camp is the place to make new friends from all over and counselors are great at introducing girls to each other and helping girls feel at home quickly! One alumna who joined us in Houston shared that she and her two best camp friends were in each other’s weddings a few years ago and that they sang camp songs for their “toasts” at the rehearsal dinners. Now that’s taking the Illahee spirit out into the world!
The 2014 highlights video has been a hit and we can’t wait to make it “live” online for everyone to enjoy over the Christmas holidays. Look out for a countdown to its debut in December!
